I've very recently entered a photography contest, and I'm asking for the help of my flist! (Yes, beyond the patient lovelies that beta'd my entry. Poor peoples. No, I mean that honestly.)
The contest is a competition that allows people to describe what their dream photo assignment might be, and the winner gets money to make that dream a reality. The 1st round is a run-off where anybody who chooses to votes for the assignments they would like to see made into reality. The 2nd round is judging (by professional photographers and others) the portfolios of the top 20 vote-getters.
I'm trying to make that top 20!
Full disclosure: registration *is* required to maintain some voting integrity in the contest, but the really good news is that I haven't received even *one* spam mail, so I'm pretty sure they are literally just using it for voter integrity. (The contest is run by Microsoft, so really, they probably already have all your information already.)
I'm already behind because I just found out about this contest a few days ago. Voting runs from March 3rd to April 3rd.

To any of you willing to throw a 'pic' vote my way, thank you very much! And if you know of anybody else who would be interested in voting for me, please send them to my entry!
It's non-fannish, though. Only 500-some words. Must be brutally honest. Apply to threnodyj@gmail.com with more details then.
Many, many thanks in advance!

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence!
I am declaring that labeling fandoms is not giving context. *nods* Though, I might be fun to make people guess... Hmmm...
( Fandom 1 - rare, old, and I'm sad I never went much further with it )
( Fandom 2 - sadly popular, and no, I'm not writing these, dang it! )
( Fandom 3 - rare, but not unknown to members of my flist )
( Fandom 4 - Yeah, good luck with this one )
( Fandom 5 - This is a fusion, and you can have a 1/2 hint: MI3 )
( Fandom 6 - My first, my only. I miss you so much, crazy, psycho fandom )
( Fandom 7 - this is another fusion, and so f'ed you get it for free - Ready for it? PotC/Ultraviolet/Ninth Gate. No. I'm not kidding. )
( Fandom 8 - my flist is in trouble if they can't get this one )
( Fandom 9 - This one, too. )
In honor of the, yes, TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY, I thought that I'd, maybe, you know, actually finished the GB2007 vacation diary. Call it procrastination and laziness at its finest, but I still get to relive in vivid, cramped handwriting detail the wonderful, wonderful 2nd half of the trip.
(For those just joining, older entries are located here with the title of GB2007.)

That having been said, I was actually posting to say that I'm watching the 3/3/09 TDS and am HORRIFIED that 1/2 of the states [might-2nd hand info] don't require Civics and/or American History?
Oh. My. God.
Is that serious? I mean, I'm actually assuming it is, because foolishly I trust The Daily Show information more than other stuff, but... Amida, Jesus and Odin combined. Really? I'd like to say as an historian I'm horrified, but as a freaking LIVING PERSON I'm horrified.
I... I get that a large amount of people believe that throwing money at the educational system is the only and/or best way to solve things. But you know what? (And I don't mean this to sound partisan, because it really, honestly isn't...) No. Just no. There are a hell of a lot of important things to focus on, but I remember being a Softmore in college and not being able to answer over half of my grandfather's 8th grade 'graduation' quiz.
Just... no.
How big a fridge does 1 person with 3 cats need? I do tend to like my meat, frozen or un-, but should I get a fridge, I also have my 1/3 fridge/freezer to use as a mini freezer for the time being. (And even possibly the fridge-that-came-with-the-house-currentl
Back story: I've actually been getting along - surprisingly splendiferously - with my 1/3 for... what 9 months now? They only issue I'm really coming across is that to keep ice cream, I have to freeze *everything* by proxy or have ice cream soup - quite nummy, actually. This is not to say that I wouldn't enjoy extra space and what not, just that I've been getting along. (If I can go to Sam's Club and not have to worry about all the frozen foods in my cart, I'd be happy. And also being able to keep the veggies in the fridge, rather than the front hall. Also, when in doubt, I freeze.)
So. My tax returns are giving me enough money to pay my credit card balance (1st time in my life I've carried a cc debt beyond 3 months! Oy!) *and* buy a fridge. Because of space I can't go beyond 33" wide, but honestly? I don't really know what cubic size I need. I mention the cats because once I get an m-fing working stove I plan on having a turkey available at pretty much all times for them, on top of my food (and vodka - I find this sad that this is a mentioning point, yes I do. Yet, being Irish, Native American and Russian amongst others, I seem to make do.)
Soooo, um. What cubic footage to I really need? About a year ago I was looking at 25', but I spoke to Linda tonight and it sounds like we've lived with a 21' for... pretty much my entire life. (I honestly never would have guessed, hence the 25' beginning.) It wasn't pretty, and we actually had 2 fridges for quite some time and this is what is really influencing me. I tend to err on the side of 'way too much' because of how I was raised. Yes, I admit it and am proud, because I survived. Ask anyone who's been to the North house.
(Erm... Cat? How big is your fridge?)
Meep?
ETA: PS - *Not* particularly interested in a french door fridge or an ice cube/water making fridge. Seriously, anybody got an icebox they don't want?
Happy [nearly late] 1st birthday to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
Nathaniel and I were discussing tonight the wisdom of where it's located. He thinks it's an awful idea because of volcanic history. Me personally? It's called the Doomsday Vault for a reason. Have any of you seen where it's located? It's an epic poem waiting to happen.
That said, I still think it's very cool and go Vault!
Incredibly exhausted, now. Sleep.
That is all.
ETA: OMG, I have a bathroom, but I don't have hot water.
Why? Because F-ING SCHWICKERTS - YEAH, YOU HEARD ME, SCHWICKERTS! - broke the pressure seal on the brand new hot water heater they installed and DIDN'T FIX IT.
But I have a sink with a faucet and a tub with a faucet! WOOT!
And for those with divx compatible players:
Moving snow!
It looks like the plumbers are going home soon because the weather is getting too bad.
They've got to find some extra parts for the kitchen sink, and they are putting in the bathroom sink now, so at least I'll have running water on two floors (2nd and basement).
One day. One day, DANG IT!
ETA: 12:37 just shoveled three inches and it's still coming down like nothing else.
It literally just started snowing here - they're predicting 10"-12" - and from one breath to the next the sky filled with flakes. Clear, then... snow everywhere. Wow.
This is not going to be fun.
:/
Plumbers are currently dodging all over the house putting stuff in. They're mostly in the kitchen right now. I had budgeted about $1100 to get the rest of the plumbing put in (3 sinks and a tub facet, including drilling) and it looks like it's going to cost me about $850! Yay!
Today's Theme: Sheppard Backstory
A Little Bit like Goldilocks, A Lot Like That Woody Allen Movie by
tzzzz - John and Sam knew each other back in the day, but for once not because John was stealing Sam's boyfriends. A rather sweet and humorous look with a well done switching between past and present, throwing Rodney into the mix.
Five Days Later by
sheafrotherdon - Delayed reaction. Nice John/Rodney friendship moment.
A Pocket Full of Posies Part One, Part Two by
giogio - The title gives the big secret away if you know what you're looking for. Which is to say, excellent title for a very well done story.
Dave's Story and the sequel, A Family Story by
tzzzz - A great look at John and Dave's relationship over the years as they grew up together and then grew apart and came back together. Very well written, excellent fleshing out of minor SGA characters.
My Brother's Keeper by
widgetfactory - A sad and somewhat rending story from Dave's point of view about John, their father, and John's relationship with his family.
Today's Theme: Groundhog's Day
All Our Yesterdays Will Haunt You by
kajikia - Looping into the middle of action.
Wit's End Part One, Part Two, Part Three by
greyias - One of the few Groundhog's fics that really gets to showing the desperation/disillusionment/pain associated with being trapped in a time loop. Very well done and very well named.
Rewind by
lizzypaul - Carter was perfectly characterized in this one. I really liked this one because it pulled the same emotional strings as “Window of Opportunity” and did a really nice job translating it to SGA. Sad, sad, and sad because while the happy ending is implied... John. Jesus. There's a good dose of humor and my mostly-non-romantic heart hopes for the best.
Vacation Hours by
slybrarian - Hee! The totally fun and amusing way to spend a time loop. Or several. Oh, John. Sometimes vacation is worth it though. Totally humor.
Iteration by
trobadora - Ooh, nicely done. Rodney making the willful decision to repeat, over and over. A dark but rather fascinating take on time looping.
Today's Theme: Kink
Thanks for the Memories Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four by
skinscript - SGA/QAF cross. I have no idea if Brian's characterization is done well since I, well, hate QAF, but I found the story well written. Kink: Voyerism, amongst others.
Filling In by
deelaundry - SGA/House, MD cross. All I can do is chuckle. There should always be more House and McKay interaction. Kink: Prostitution.
Healing Station Argh Part One, Part Two by
toft_froggy - Sex and the art of pegging in the Pegasus Galaxy. Kink: Too many to count, really.
The Perfect Type of Pleasure by
ladycat777 - Kink: Cigarettes
Feeding Frenzy by
shallott/asolat - Kink: Orgies! Lots and lots of orgies.
So, tomorrow our office is having what is having been referred to for the past 6 weeks as 'staff training'.
Well, we just got an e-mail from Prez's asst. that says: if you haven't yet filled this out, do so before 4pm today. (Erm, dudette, did you even tell us about this???)
( Read more... )I suppose it could be worse - I could have to go around hugging everybody.
Am very tired lately and going to bed now. So first, tonight's sunset:
